TASTE WITHOUT WASTE | MY TOP 5 TIPS ON REDUCING WASTE

if you have followed me for a while you will know that I absolutely hate waste in every sense of the word, especially food, and one of my goals this year was to cut down on things and be a little bit more minimalistic in all aspects of our lives, especially now we have an little addition to our family :) - the food shop was one of them.

A campaign called Taste For Waste with BPI Consumer Packaging has really opened my eyes up to how much food waste we actually accumulate. In the UK alone we throw out 7 million tonne of food and drink every year - honestly that is ridiculous and I honestly didn’t think it was that much!.

Are you one of the 20% that throw away food if it’s on it’s best before day, or once opened chuck it away and buy fresh?.  Reducing waste like this could not only save you £470 every year but it is so much better for the environment, with more convenient shopping and throwing away to buy fresh brings a lot more packaging to dispose of.

Do you recycle? Or even know how to recycle efficiently? 24% of us have admitted to only recycling occasionally. I am in that 24% .

I have come up with my top 5 tips to reduce waste and be a little more prepared for them throw away moments :)

1 - shop online, honestly since I have shopped online I have found it so much easier to buy the essentials, what I need for the week or month and stick to the list that I have made - so make a list ! :)

2 - Meal plan! Meal planning has literally saved us hundreds. If you stick to a meal plan you know what you are having for every day of the week and you won’t end up finding half eaten / out of date packets of ham at the back of your fridge!

3 - Bulk buy, I know this one has its good and bad points , I only bulk buy the produce that will effectively save the money and reduce packaging at the same time , which is pastas and rices

4- use your freezer! If you don’t meal plan and feel like some of the produce you have bought won’t get used for that week ahead then stick it in the freezer. If you are funny when it comes to putting meat in the freezer then label it so you know how long it has been in there to put your mind at ease. Honestly? Meat is fine in the freezer and taste exactly the same :)

5- Last but not least is my favourite . Veggie soup. If you have a slow cooker then your in for a treat . At the end of the week when you can end up with the odd potatoe and a few carrots , maybe an onion and a few parsnips sitting in your fridge draw. Stick them all in the slow cooker in the morning with 500ml of water , some salt and pepper , and a stock cube and there you have a batch of veggie soup! This is one of our favourite lunches and the kids absoulately love it .

Id love to know how you feel about waste in your home and if you have any top tips for reducing it :)
