THE GARDEN CHALLENGE THAT TESTED MY PATIENCE

The weather this summer has been absolutely glorious, and it’s done wonders for my mood. There’s something about waking up to blue skies and warm sunshine that makes the whole day feel brighter and I love being in my mums garden with a tea in the morning sun. We’ve been staying at my mum’s since our weekend away at Richardson’s holiday park , and it’s been lovely spending a few weeks here during the holidays.

We have had the perfect balance, busy days out enjoying the summer and slower mornings where we have all just relaxed, especially the girls! :) . My biggest challenge over the past couple of weeks has been to sort the garden.

Mum’s garden is huge, around 150ft long, and after my dad passed away in June, my siblings and I cleared a lot of it out, but gardens have a mind of their own, and by the time I came back, it had turned into a bit of a jungle again.

I could tell it was weighing on Mum. She has arthritis in her shoulders, which makes gardening painful, and it had become difficult for Dad too . I didn’t want her to feel stressed about it, so I made it my mission this week to get it sorted.

Three days straight of digging, cutting back, mowing, and hauling garden rubbish later, and it looks brilliant, and yes, I am going to blow my own trumpet here, I am so proud of myself! My body, however, feels like I have been in the gym every day for a month, and I ache in places I didn’t know could ache, but it’s worth it to know that Mum can walk outside with her morning cup of tea and smile when I go home.

When we haven’t been out or knee deep in stinging nettles, my legs are a mess!, we’ve been making the most of the craft activities we brought along. The bubble slime kit from Baker Ross was a big hit, and we also tried the aqua gel dupes from TikTok, the water magic elf kits.

Nila loves these! The colours are bright, the shapes are fun, especially as we got a pumpkin one in this set!, and they are so easy, she can do them by herself. The longer you leave them, the more they set, and then you can play with them, a great craft activity without any of the mess.

It’s been a perfect mix of sunshine, activities and making memories. Sometimes the best summer days aren’t the big trips away, they are the ones spent at home, helping someone you love, and enjoying the little things.
