WATCHING MY CHILD GROW | REWARD CHARTS , INDEPENDENCE AND EVENING ROUTINES

Colouring this evening with Nila really got me thinking about how fast these years go by. It honestly feels like yesterday she was shuffling around on her bum because she couldn’t quite crawl yet, and now she’s getting so big, I can’t quite believe it.

This summer, I have been a bit fixated on helping Nila become more independent. If you have followed me over the years, you will know she has always had an extra hand with things from me ,making her bed, putting her socks and shoes on. Sometimes it’s been just to get out the door quickly, and other times, hand on heart, I think it’s been because I really don’t want her to grow up.

She will be in Year 4 this September, her last year of primary school before middle school. In our town, middle school runs from Year 5 to Year 8, which I honestly hate. It feels like the kids are expected to grow up faster than they would if things were normal, and I am so not ready for that.

The early years fly by, don’t they? And this summer, I have been really in my feels about it. To encourage a bit of independence, I have started a reward chart for kids: stars for making her bed, putting her socks on, and cleaning her room. A full jar means some Robux. It’s going so well and she is so proud of herself, and she makes me so proud too.

Part of me feels sad too. This era of little-bum-shuffling childhood is fading, and that’s the bittersweet thing about watching your kids grow. Encouraging independence in kids is such a delicate emotion, you want them to shine, but you also want to hold on to these moments.

We have also brought back our evening routine colouring sessions, an episode of The Worst Witch, and then a book before bed. Some nights, settling her can feel like a bit of a struggle, but I know these moments won’t last forever.

So, even when it feels meh, I’m trying to cherish them for a little bit longer.
