World Book Day is just around the corner, and we absolutely love getting creative with our costumes! As a family of bookworms, we enjoy diving into our favourite stories and bringing beloved characters to life. This year, after going through all our favourite books, Nila decided she wanted to recreate the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland.
This choice was extra special for me as Alice in Wonderland has been one of my favourite books since childhood. So, we were both so excited to bring this costume idea to life. Thanks to Baker Ross, we had everything we needed to make our DIY Queen of Hearts outfit.
We started with a plain white T-shirt as the base. Nila drew a large heart on the front and carefully painted it half black and half cherry red using fabric paints from Baker Ross. These paints are absolutely brilliant—vibrant, long-lasting, and easy to work with. We’ve used them multiple times for various crafts, and they never disappoint. Once the T-shirt was painted, we set it aside to dry while moving on to the accessories.
To enhance the Queen of Hearts theme, we came up with a fantastic idea—creating playing card badges to add that extra touch to the costume. This was such a fun and simple activity!
Using Baker Ross self adhesive badge pins which come with a handy peel-back sticky tape, we designed miniature playing card badges. We cut white card into small rectangles and decorated them with hearts, numbers, and symbols to resemble playing cards. The best part? The sticky tape on the badge backs made assembling them effortlessly, and the final result was perfect for completing our Queen of Hearts look.
No Queen of Hearts costume would be complete without a crown! Luckily, Nila already had a queen’s crown headband, but Baker Ross also have an Alice in Wonderland-themed colour-in mask set, which is perfect for photos and getting into character. The masks are not only fun to decorate but also easy to take off when needed.
We used felt-tip pens from Baker Ross to colour in the masks, and, as always, colouring turned into a long girl's catch up session. We had music playing in the background and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of creativity and crafting.
Once the T-shirt was dry and all the accessories were in place, Nila put everything together and the finished outfit looked absolutely amazing! She did an incredible job bringing her vision to life, and she’s so excited to show her teachers and friends on World Book Day.
