EASY WAYS TO MAKE EXTRA SPACE IN YOUR HOME

One of the biggest problems for families is the lack of space in their homes. As kids come along and start to grow, the rooms quickly fill up and space runs out.

It’s no surprise that many of us are looking for easy ways to make extra space in our homes. Thankfully there are ways to do it without needing to build a big extension. So, let’s take a look at some of the least stressful solutions.

Use the space you have

The first and perhaps most substantial solution is to make better use of the space you have. If you have an integral garage that you only use for storage, then it’s ideal for adding extra living space. Converting a garage will require you to take out the door and build a wall. It’ll also need a window to let in the light. Plus, it’s likely to need insulating, and perhaps extra wiring or plumbing. But it’s still going to be easier and cheaper than building a traditional extension.

It’s a similar story for a loft extension, although you’ll need to sacrifice some of the existing space to fit in a staircase.

Another way to add extra space without extending, is to take out a partition wall. This is ideal when you have two small rooms that aren’t usable because of their size. Taking out a partition wall to make one big, functional room can give you more useable space without extending. This works for a kitchen and dining room, where the dining room is too detached or too small to use.

It also works well to combine a single bedroom and box room when the box room isn’t big enough for a bed. This creates a bigger bedroom that can sleep two youngsters instead of one.

Add rooms without an extension

If neither of these options will work for you, it may be necessary to add a room some other way. And if you’re keen to keep the upheaval and costs to a minimum, then adding a garden room or conservatory could be a good solution.

Garden rooms can be bought in the same way as a garden shed, with ready-made panels that fix together.

You can now find options with full insulation, modern patio doors and secure locks. And often they don’t need planning permission. Garden rooms can be used as home offices, a den or games room for the kids, or a quiet space to chill out.

If you’d rather have a space that’s connected to the rest of the home, you may find a conservatory more suitable.

Specialist companies can usually fit one to the rear of your home quickly and easily. However, there are a few things to think about. For example, how will it connect to the rest of your home? Will it be through a back door, or do you want it fully connected to your kitchen, dining room or lounge?

If you want an open space that’s useable all year round, then an orangery may be your best option. This involves a bit more building work but should give you a more energy efficient and comfortable space to use.

  1. It definitely is a struggle, because you want to add all these decorations to make your house look beautiful. However, that leads to there being less space for much movement, especially children.

  2. I think making sure you utilise the height of rooms is important. Go for wardrobes that go to the ceiling or shelves etc to make the most x

  3. We have a big patio so we're thinking to close off a section of it and turn it into a garden room so to speak. Summer project...

  4. I love all those ideas. We have extra space in the garage and we made a little space for the kids to play.

  5. Having not enough space for a growing family or growing collection of items is always an issue in our house! We do lots of clear outs - but thinking about how we use the space we have would be a big help.
