I’ve been slowly working my way through Freida McFadden's books as you most probably know. I bet you are sick to death of book reviews, I am in my book worm era, they will not be stopping anytime soon :).
I recently came across a little short story by her, The Gift. A clever reimagining of the timeless classic, The Gift of the Magi. 47 pages long, it’s the perfect read for a cosy evening in bed, with a hot cup of tea and a cheeky Christmas slice, yes I am still obsessed and slowly going through my supplies :)
Set on Christmas Eve, the story follows Stella Hansen, who is facing a difficult holiday season. Despite working two jobs, she finds herself completely broke, unable to buy her husband a gift for their first Christmas together as a married couple.
Feeling desperate and hopeless, Stella stumbles upon a peculiar pawn shop where an enigmatic storekeeper offers her an intriguing trade. Torn between her love for her husband and the mysterious consequences of the storekeeper's offer, Stella must make a choice.
She longs to give her husband the Christmas gift of his dreams, but as the story unfolds, the question lingers: will her decision come at a cost too great to bear?
I loved it—it brought back a wave of nostalgia, reminding me of old Goosebumps episode from the 90s with its mysterious and slightly eerie plot.
