FINDING CHRISTMAS MAGIC AT OUR LOCAL LIGHT SWITCH-ON

We always start off the festive season with the Christmas light switch-on. There’s just something about it that kicks in the Christmas magic for us, and we have been going for years now; it has become one of our favourite family Christmas traditions.

This year felt really different for me. I normally get a taxi there, but after passing my driving test, I drove, and it was such a lovely feeling. We arrived a little earlier than usual, so we could take our time having a look at all the Christmas market stalls and soaking up the festive atmosphere.

Nila used some of her pocket money to buy a few Christmas treats for our movie night later. She even won a few prizes at the Brownies stand, which is her guide group, and it was so sweet seeing her Brownie leader there, smiling away and getting everyone in the spirit.

We had hot dogs and chips for dinner, a proper little festive light switch on dinner for us. We’d been talking about those hot dogs all day, and honestly, they went down an absolute treat!

There was a lot of singing, and the band was brilliant as always. We got stuck into some Christmas crafts at the arts and crafts stand — reindeer lanterns, tree decorations and even Christmas tattoos (didn’t know they were a thing, but they definitely are!).

We met the Grinch and his naughty elf, then joined in with the big Christmas lights countdown. Santa arrived on his sleigh, and the whole place just lit up, such a lovely, magical evening.

On the way home, we took the long route so we could look at all the neighbourhood Christmas lights. I can’t explain how much it lifted us. Losing my Dad, I knew this Christmas would be hard, but I’m trying to find little sprinkles of Christmas magic each day. Not just for the girls, but because I know he’d want me to.

Finding joy in the small things is what this season is about.

  4. I wandered down to ours at the weekend. There was a Christmas market, a DJ, snow machine and then Santa came along. I love it when local towns make an effort. Such fun for the kids.
