ENCOURAGING A LOVE OF READING IN A SCREEN FILLED WORLD

Coming from a home where my mum loved to read, I definitely know where my love for books comes from. Getting stuck into a good book with a cup of tea is honestly one of my favourite things to do, and seeing my mum reading while I was growing up is without a doubt the reason I still read today.

That love of books has now passed through generations. My nan loved reading, my mum loved reading, I love reading, and now all three of my girls do too. There is something really special about that. In a world filled with iPads, phones, and endless scrolling, it’s so nice to see them switch off and get lost in a story.

Why Reading Still Matters for Children

I know times change and technology is constantly evolving, but encouraging children to read is still so important. Reading helps with imagination, focus, creativity, and emotional development, and sometimes it’s just nice to enjoy something other than another game or mindless scrolling.

Making space for books, stories, and quiet time has become something we really value.

Discovering Audiobooks with the Yoto Player

Nila got a Yoto Player for Christmas, and she’s been completely hooked ever since. Her love for reading has naturally evolved into audiobooks, and she’s obsessed. Watching her independently choose a story, pop the card in, and sit and listen is honestly such a joy to see and melts my heart seeing her walking around with her headphones in, lost in a book.

The Yoto Player has been brilliant for screen-free listening and encouraging independence. It supports reading, listening, and imagination without relying on a screen, something we are really trying to focus on more in 2026.

It’s also not just about stories. You can listen to music too, and yes, K-pop Demon Hunters fans, the album is available!

Making Stories Personal with Create Your Own Cards

One of my favourite features is the Create Your Own cards you can purchase. These let you upload your own content, which makes storytelling even more fun. You can record yourself reading bedtime stories, add songs, upload podcasts, or even leave little voice messages

There are also accessories available to keep it all together. If your little ones are as bad as Nila, she loses everything. Things you can buy include headphones, protective cases, and card albums to keep everything organised. You can use other headphones to keep the cost down :)

So far, Nila’s favourite stories have been Matilda and James and the Giant Peach, classic stories that never get old and ones she has physically read and has on her bookshelf too.

Encouraging a love of reading, whether through physical books or audiobooks, is something I truly believe in. In a world that’s becoming more digital by the day, creating space for stories feels more important than ever.
