So, you just passed your test, congratulations!, Welcome to the world of freedom, independence and terrifying weather right now for us drivers. Winter driving as a new driver is basically like regular driving, but colder, slipperier, and with a soundtrack of your own anxiety, the struggle is real friends!.
If you are anything like me driving is this weather, winter driving was a rude awakening. One minute you are cruising, windows down, summer playlist blasting off to the park with the kids, and the next you are staring at a frost-covered windscreen at 8 in the morning wondering why life is so hard, dramatic maybe but so real :)
Here are a few things I wish someone told me when I first hit the roads in winter:
Frost Isn’t Just Cold,It’s Sneaky
Seriously, frost loves to hide black ice in corners and shaded bits of the road. You will think it’s all clear, then whoosh your car decides to do its own dance routine. Always take it easy on bends and watch your braking distances.
Lights On, Always
It gets dark early in winter, keep your headlights on,you will see more, and other drivers will see you too.
Warm Clothes!
You might hate big coats to drive in like me, but if you break down and it’s freezing, that light jean jacket suddenly feels like a wet tissue. Gloves, hat, scarf, all essential people.
Know What You Really Need Insurance-Wise
You have got your basic car insurance ,that’s a no-brainer, but think about the unexpected stuff too. For example, gap insurance can be a real lifesaver if your car gets written off. It covers the difference between what your insurer pays and what you actually owe on the car , really handy when you are trying to replace something without breaking the bank.

I don't mind driving in the snow and ice, it's the low sun that bothers me most. I couldn't see the road at all when I was driving form the soon run yesterday morning!!

I don't mind driving in the snow, but just recently I've had a few moments where I've needed to go out in the snow while it's dark, and I've really not wanted to. It didn't feel worth the risk! I'm glad it's all melted now thankfully!

These are extremely helpful, especially if, like me, you live in Canada lol....It's been snowing like crazy lately and driving on snow is a skill you gotta master.
ReplyDeleteThese are such great tips. Black ice is such a deadly hazard, and it's so hard to see. Reduce the speed!
ReplyDeleteI love the tip about having your lights one. The goes for the daytime, as well, when the weather is gray. Visibility is key.
ReplyDeleteThese are useful especially for new drivers. I really hate ice on the roads, I always take care on corners just in case and am watchful of car distance.
