CLOSET ORGANISATION FOR FASHION LOVERS

If you love fashion, you know how hard it is to resist a new silhouette, a new colour combination, a fresh take on a classic or just a real bargain. While younger people - Gen Z for instance, are naturally amongst the most fashion conscious, it’s a fact that 81% of this group say they need more space at home.

It can be a stressful conflict when you can’t indulge your passion because you don’t have room.

Here are some practical suggestions that can help you solve the shopping vs space conundrum.

The Shopping Dilemma

All over the country, people are enjoying designer outlets. They’re the perfect hunting ground when you need a little something special, or a quick pick-me-up just because you deserve it. It’s great, but the closet gets ever fuller.

You can solve this problem with a spot of seasonal rotation for your clothes. How? Self-storage helps enormously. One of the best shopping places in the UK is Bicester Village, so if you’re around that area, have a look at Bicester self storage. The same goes for any of the other popular fashion or designer outlets around the country.

With a self-storage unit, you can set up a system whereby you only have this season’s clothes at home. The out-of-season stuff is safely cleaned, packed and stowed away where it stays pristine. It’s a great option for bargain hunters who plan to resell the items too, maybe at online markets or auction places, for example.

A Quick Declutter

Fashion collections very easily get muddled and messy, with stuff at the back of the wardrobe you’ve totally forgotten about. Your first step to getting organised is to rediscover every item you own.

Get it all out. You could pile it on the (clean) floor or on your bed. Even on both if you’ve really got a lot.

Handle every item. Do you still love it? Would you still wear it? Have you got other things it goes with? If the answer’s yes, put it in a separate pile of things to keep. If the answer’s no, put it in the discard pile.

Your discard pile might be damaged things, items that are too small or large, stuff that’s way past its fashion date, or simply a change in your personal style. These items you can either throw away, repurpose, or donate.

A Fresh Re-sort

Once you have your collection sorted into rough piles, it’s time to restock the wardrobe. Give the interior a good dust and polish so you’re starting really fresh.

There are several ways you could go about organising things:

• By Colour - grouping similar colours together.
• By Function - trousers together, skirts together etc.
• By Occasion - workwear, party gear, casual, smart.
• By Season - but really, you’re better off keeping out-of-season stuff in local self storage so there’s plenty of room without cramming and crushing.

By grouping clothes together in a way that suits your personal preference, you can find what you’re looking for quickly. It makes selecting items and getting ready the fun time getting dressed ought to be.

Practical Organisation

Depending what type of wardrobe you have, you might need to customise it a bit to get it to really work the way you’d like.

You could, for instance, decide a set of drawers (those plastic craft sets work well) installed under shorter hanging garments would great for smalls, shoes, or accessories.

Hangers matter. Look for tiered hangers to maximise the available space, or slim velvet hangers that silky items won’t slip off and which take up less rail space. Wooden ones look great, but they’re bulky so not ideal when you’re trying to maximise your hanging area.

Install an extra hanging rail, either with screws or a simple tension rod for lighter items. Tension rods also work as shoe racks when you tension them across the bottom of the wardrobe.

Inside doors, you could fix slim rails for hanging scarves, belts or beads and necklaces. You could even install a small peg board for earrings, makeup, and hairstyling accessories. Add a mirror and you have a complete dressing station.

Keeping it Organised

Without a bit of ongoing maintenance your closet will soon get in a jumble again.

Every couple of months or so, have a quick reassess to remove items that no longer fit, reorganise items if they’ve accidentally been put in the wrong group, and make a note of any gaps so you’re ready for some intentional shopping.

One trick you could try is to start with all the hangers facing the same direction, then as you wear items put the hanger the other way round. You’ll soon see which items you always reach for and which ones never get worn.

The focus of organising your wardrobe shouldn’t be to have fewer items, but to have them better organised so you can see everything. You’ll make better styling choices, use more of what you have, and get a lot more fun and enjoyment out of your clothes and passion for fashion.
