SHOULD I SET UP MY OWN BUSINESS?

Being a business owner can be very rewarding, but there are obviously lots of things to consider before you get started.

Have a think about your financial situation and whether or not you require any government support and try and calculate how much money you’ll need to make in order for the business to be successful and provide you with the necessary income.

Make sure you do plenty of research before you begin; understand your target market and who your competitors are. What are they doing to stand out from the crowd and is this something you can replicate?.

If you are selling products, consider various different suppliers so that you can make the best return on investment. The same applies to things like delivery services, if you need one.

Will you need to hire employees to help you with the business operation, or can you outsource work? Perhaps you don’t need to do either and can operate as a sole trader for the time being. Regardless, it’s important to weigh up your options, just in case your business does become to big for you to handle alone.

Of course, you’ll need to think about how you plan to market your business. Nowadays, it’s important to have a website and place an emphasis on your online presence. You may need to consult a web design agency to help you with this, but it will be worth it when your customers start finding you on the Internet.

Other marketing strategies include things like social media advertising, traditional printed flyers or even promotional merchandise. You might have to experiment with a few different tactics until you find something that works well for your business.

Do you plan to operate from an office environment? If so, you’ll need to think about any equipment you need to buy, such as computers or a printer. There are actually plenty of options for leasing a printer if that’s something that might work for you.

Make sure your office space has plenty of natural light to improve employee productivity, as well as keeping your electricity bills as low as they can be.

Once you’ve done all your research and wrapped your head around everything, then you’ll know if setting up a business is the right thing for you. Take your time and invest in a decent notepad so you can write down any thoughts or ideas that randomly pop into your head.
