CHOOSING A CAR : KEY CONSIDERATIONS

Not everyone needs to own a car. But once you’ve got your first one, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever go back to walking and taking public transport. You’ll be a driver for life! And that means that you’ll likely own many cars over the course of your lifetime. Given the expense of cars -- not to mention the influence they have on our lives -- it’s important to think carefully about the car that you buy. You’ll have it for a fair few years, so you’ll want to ensure that it’s a car that you love!

So how should you go about ensuring that you pick the right one? In this blog, we’ll run through a few of the key considerations that you’ll want to keep in mind.

Your Budget

You’ll need to splash some cash if you’re going to get a set of wheels that you love! But, of course, there can be a big difference in the amount that you’ll have to spend. Before you begin your search, figure out how much you can realistically afford to pay -- and then make sure that you stick to it! You may also want to factor in the fuel efficiency of the car. You’ll be filing it up plenty and will want to ensure that you get as much bang for your buck.

City v Rural

You’ll also want to consider the environment in which you’ll be driving. There are cars that are more suitable for rural areas; other cars are more suited to the city. If you live in a densely populated area, you’ll want to focus on smaller cars since they’ll be easier to park in tight parking spaces. Small jaguar cars and little Volkswagen vehicles are a good option; they’re small enough for the city yet still look great. If you live in a rural area, then think about the elements. You’ll need a car that can handle heavy rain, big puddles, and things like that.

Carrying People

You’re the driver, so the car is mostly about you. But it’s not only about you. If you have a family, then you’ll need to get a car that’ll allow you to easily transport the kids, dogs, and anyone else! Also, if you’re a family that loves to take long road tripsthen consider how well the vehicle that you’re looking at buying will fare.

Quality Control

There’s a sea of information out there on the world wide web! So why not make the most of it? Whatever car you’re looking at getting, there will be a lot of reviews and the like on various websites. You would do well to read them. If you’re going to spend a lot of money on getting your hands on a new set of wheels, then you’ll want to ensure that it’s quality. Of course, you don’t need to take the review as gospel. You can make up your own mind. But it’s good to be aware of any common problems before you open up your wallet.

  1. I am a driver and when our car was off road I would feel trapped even if not needing to use it. We have two now but we do have to take into consideration what we would be using it for and if it would work for us.

  3. Great tips! For us the budget and city vs rural were big considerations. In the end we went for leasing an electric (cheaper than buying!) and we were able to do electric as we were mainly doing city/suburban driving but if we doing rural I am not sure we would have gone for an EV.

  4. Thank you for these helpful tips. I am planning to have a car with my husband, it's hard for us to take a bus since the bus stop is far away from our house. Thanks for the tips.

  6. Lots of good tips here for first time car buyer. Do agree the size of the car depends on how many people in the family and where you live also determines the type of car
