HOW DO YOU CORRECTLY LAYER YOUR JEWELLERY?

Layering jewellery is an art that can make or break your entire look. When done well, it gives you a personal, stylish flair that expresses your individuality. It’s all about finding the balance - making bold choices without overwhelming your outfit.

But, with so many ways to do it, where do you begin?

What are the basics?
Before you start layering, take a step back and think about the look you want to achieve. After all, jewellery layering isn't just about throwing on as many pieces as you can; it’s about creating a cohesive look. The key lies in mixing delicate and bold pieces. For example, you might wear a thin gold chain alongside a statement necklace with a chunky pendant, but the pieces should complement one another rather than compete for attention.
Start with a base piece, like a simple chain or a classic bracelet, and build from there. You can layer multiple thin chains or bracelets, but when it comes to chunkier items, consider balancing them with finer, more subtle pieces. Think of it as creating an outfit – your jewellery should elevate your look, not overshadow it.

Metals & materials
These days, jewellery designers are encouraging us to mix metals, and it looks like it’s a trend that’s here to stay. Keep it simple and allow the different textures and finishes to shine in their own way.

When layering, think about how the materials work together. Mixing textures can create a sophisticated effect. For instance, you can pair a sleek, polished ring with one that’s more textured or matte. Don’t be afraid to experiment with gemstones too. Mixing a bold gemstone necklace with a few dainty chains can offer a striking contrast that feels fresh and exciting.

Layering necklaces
Necklaces are a perfect piece to layer, but the key is getting the lengths right. A general rule of thumb is to vary the lengths of your necklaces to create a graduated effect. Start with a shorter choker or collar necklace and build up to longer chains. This adds depth and prevents your necklaces from tangling at the same time. Plus, the layered look creates a relaxed, effortless vibe.
If you want to add even more personality, choose necklaces with subtle charms or pendants that reflect your style. You might wear one with your birthstone, and another with a delicate pendant that holds sentimental value. Layering necklaces is a great way to make a personal statement while keeping things effortlessly chic!

Mixing bracelets and rings
Don't be afraid to go all out with the stacking trend. Multiple delicate bangles or cuffs can be stacked up your arm for a boho-inspired look, or you can mix different types of bracelets, from chunky bangles to dainty chain styles.
Rings are another piece to experiment with. Consider wearing several rings across your fingers or add a statement ring to one hand while stacking the rest with simple, thin bands. Vintage rings make fantastic centre pieces; Looking at second-hand jewellery can be a great way to find unique pieces that add even more character to your layered look.
But here's the trick: always keep one thing in mindbalance. If you go bold with your rings, keep the bracelets more understated, or vice versa. You want your jewellery to feel cohesive, not chaotic (unless that’s your goal, I guess!)

Jewellery vs. outfit
It’s very easy to get carried away with layering jewellery, but remember, it’s just one part of your overall look. When styling, always consider your outfit. If you’re wearing a bold necklace or a chunky bracelet, you might want to keep your clothing simpler, especially if it’s patterned or overly detailed. On the flip side, if your outfit is relatively plain, jewellery can be your chance to add flair and personality.
