When October hits, it's all things spooky in this house, and of course, that means a horror film of some sort every evening if I can squeeze one in! Not that I need an excuse to watch horror films, but at least in October it's considered perfectly normal to spend your evenings watching people get chased around by masked murderers, right?.
I don't know about you, but we have our go-to films that have to be watched every Halloween. The classics that come out year after year, regardless of how many times we've seen them, but I have been on the hunt to find some new films and series to add to my own watch list this year away from the girls, and I've found some absolute crackers!
CRYSTAL LAKE – SKY & NOW
Now, this one I've been waiting for! If you're a fan of Friday the 13th, you will know exactly why I'm excited about this one. Crystal Lake is a brand-new prequel series taking us back to where it all began, long before Jason Voorhees became one of horror's most recognisable killers.
The series follows Pamela Voorhees, Jason's mother, and explores the events surrounding her son's death at Camp Crystal Lake. Linda Cardellini takes on the role of Pamela, and I'm really looking forward to seeing a different side to the story.
I've always loved the old-school slasher films, so the thought of heading back to Crystal Lake with a whole new series is right up my street. Although, why anyone would willingly go anywhere near that camp is beyond me. Surely by now we've established that camping and horror films are never a good combination! :)
Available on Sky and NOW from 19 October.
HALLOWARRIOR – SHUDDER
This one caught my attention straight away, and honestly, it looks absolutely wild!
Hallowarrior follows a teenage girl called Pumpkin, who has been surviving alone after a disease wipes out most of humanity. She's determined to keep her Halloween traditions alive and decides to invite other survivors to celebrate. Lovely idea in theory, except the people who turn up aren't exactly the sort you'd want knocking on your door for a few sweets!
This one looks like it could be a really good watch. Plus, with a main character called Pumpkin, how could we possibly leave it off the list!
Available on Shudder from 16 October.
OTHER MOMMY – CINEMA
Right, this one looks seriously creepy, and I am HERE for it!
Other Mommy follows a young girl called Bela, who begins communicating with a mysterious presence in her home. The rather disturbing part? This thing looks just like her mum. Because apparently having one mother isn't terrifying enough, we're throwing another one into the mix! It's giving Coraline for adults!
This is definitely one I'm hoping to catch at the cinema, and I'll be dragging Sam along to this one. Someone needs to be there when I jump out of my seat!
R. L. STINE'S PUMPKINHEAD – DIGITAL RENTAL
Goosebumps fans, this one's for us!!!!
I grew up loving R. L. Stine's creepy stories, so I knew it had to go on the list.
The film follows a boy called Sam, whose brother mysteriously disappears. As if that wasn't strange enough, nobody else seems to remember his brother ever existed! Sam sets out to uncover what's going on, and let's just say there's a rather weird Halloween curse involved.
I'm not expecting it to leave me sleeping with the lights on, but sometimes you just want a bit of nostalgic horror without needing therapy afterwards :)
Available to rent or buy digitally in the UK.
AMERICAN HORROR STORY: SEASON 13 – DISNEY+
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the cast for this one?!
American Horror Story is back for its 13th season, and they've brought back some absolute legends. Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett are all returning, and honestly, that's enough to get me interested before I've even watched a trailer!
I've always loved how weird and disturbing American Horror Story can be. You never quite know what you are going to get, and some seasons have definitely left me wondering what on earth I've just watched.
I've got a feeling this one could keep us entertained for a few evenings. Although knowing me, I'll probably say we are only watching one episode, and suddenly it'll be midnight!!
Streaming on Disney+ UK, with new episodes throughout the whole of October.
THE LAST HOUSE – NETFLIX
The film follows a family who suddenly find themselves trapped inside their own home, with no way out. As their supplies begin to run low, they have to work together to survive while trying to figure out exactly what's keeping them there.
Imagine being stuck in your own house with something mysterious stopping you from leaving. I mean, I love a weekend at home as much as the next person, but that's taking it a little too far...
This sounds like the sort of film where I'll spend the entire time coming up with theories, probably get every single one wrong and then act surprised at the ending!
Available now on Netflix.
All that's left to do is stock up on the Halloween essentials. Plenty of snacks, some healthy-ish treats because we are trying to be good, emphasis on the trying, something nice to drink and, obviously, a little trip to TK Maxx for a new Halloween mug. Not that I needed another one, but someone has managed to break the one I only recently picked up! Honestly, nothing is safe in this house!
Happy spooky season! 🖤🎃
