Are you aware that if you encouragyour child to get more sleep, eat healthy foods and take part in more physical activity, you could be helping them to improve their education? Studies have concluded that pupils who make healthy lifestyle choices are better at concentrating, while unhealthy lifestyle choices and poor nutrition can have the opposite effect on academic achievement.

 Of course, all parents want the best for their children and their learning experiences both in and out of school to be effective. I have teamed up with an independent school in London to provideparents with some additional information about how various lifestyle choices can impact our children’s education.  

First things first, make sure your children are fed a nutritiousbreakfast at the start of each day. It is labelled the most important meal of the day for a good reason. Try to choose foods that filled with protein, fibre and various vitamins.

 These will all help their little bodies and brains to function as best they can for the rest of the dayEssentially, a healthy breakfast will help with concentration and boost energy levels to ensure your child is ready to learn. An unhealthy or sugar-filled breakfast will cause them to crash at some point during the day and they will be lethargic and unable to focus. The same applies to sugary snacks, so try and avoid those.

Restricting screen time on an evening is another important lifestyle decision that can help your child. Too many children are spending an increasing amount of time on their digital devices when they should be playing outside, drawing or reading. 

These are more creative ways for them to spend their time and will help them with other aspects of their learning. Taking part in some sort of physical activity on a regular basis is also one of the most effective ways to improve memory and attention; it can limit stress and anxiety and help both children and adults to learn more. 

Sleep is another important element of a healthy lifestyle. Children who don’t get 8-9 hours of sleep each night can find it more difficult to pay attention to things. With that said, ensure your child has a reasonable bedtime that they stick to every night, even on weekends.

 In fact, implementing a good routine for the family as a whole is really important. Try and stick to a schedule and make sure meals and bedtime are the same each day, especially if you have young children so they begin to notice a pattern each day. 

This type of structure is beneficial to children because it ensures they feel organised and stable, which is important for their learning.
