THE BENEFITS OF OUTDOOR LEARNING FOR CHILDREN

All children love being outdoors. Squelching in mud, splashing in puddles and climbing trees – Many of us can relate to these fun childhood memories and understand why they are important learning opportunities for children.

One of the best things about outdoor learning is that it helpchildren to realise that learning can happen anywhere; not just in a classroom. To discover more of the benefits of outdoor learning, here is some helpful information from an Independent School in London

Supports personal skills:

Outdoor learning gives children the opportunity to practice different personal skills and abilities. For example, building a den in the woods requires teamwork, following a map tests a child’s critical thinking skills, and working out how to cross a stream involves problem solving skills. Developing these personal skills will help to boost your child’s confidence.

Improves wellbeing

Learning outdoors encourages your child to lead an active and healthy lifestyle, which will improve their overall wellbeing. Walking is an ideal way to get some exercise and discover new places and wildlife along the way. This simple activity can help to build a lifelong love of the outdoors.

Encourages problem solving

Outdoor experiences present many new challenges, which help children to develop their problem-solving skills. Through outdoor activities, children are able to identify hazards and evaluate risks. By making the right decisions children will grow in confidence and any wrong decisions will simply become learning opportunities.

Fosters a love of nature

Regular outdoor adventures encourage children to engage with nature. They also help to teach children about global environmental issues, such as deforestation and pollution. Children learn to appreciate and respect the world around them, which will hopefully contribute towards a better planet in the future.

If you wish to truly embrace outdoor learning with your family, perhaps you could consider a camping trip? During your trip your child will have an opportunity to explore nature, learn survival skills and try new activities such as map reading and making a fire. Don’t forget to pack marshmallows!

  1. I think outdoor learning is so important, both the schools I have worked in have huge forest school areas and the benefit to the children was incredible.
