HOW TO STYLE CUSHIONS AND THROWS LIKE A PRO

Your sofa is probably the heart of your living room, right? So, how you style it can totally change the whole feel of the space. I love using cushions and throws to make things feel cosy, stylish, and put together, without needing to spend an absolute fortune or having to redecorate the entire room.

Here’s how I style cushions and throws on my sofa to keep things fresh, comfy, and totally "me".

 Keep It Balanced (Or Not!)

First, decide if you want things to look neat or more relaxed.

  • Symmetrical = tidy and polished. Great if you are after a more formal vibe. Pop the bigger cushions on each end and the smaller ones towards the middle.

  • Asymmetrical = cosy and casual. I love this look, and it feels a bit more “lived in.” For a standard 3-seater, aim for 3–6 cushions in different sizes. Big ones at the ends, smaller in the middle.

If you need a few extras (because let’s be honest, there is no such thing as too many cushions), I always recommend checking out places like Ottoman Textiles for affordable options.

 Play with Colour and Pattern

Don’t be afraid of colour! If you’ve got a neutral sofa like a navy, grey, or beige one, cushions and throws are the perfect way to switch things up.

A little trick I use: the rule of three. Choose 3 patterns that all share at least one colour. For example, a floral, a stripe, and a plain one that all include blue or mustard.

Also, always add at least one plain cushion to break up busy prints and give the eyes a little rest.

 Add Texture for Extra Cosiness

Mixing different textures adds so much warmth and interest. Think velvet, linen, cotton, chunky knit, even a touch of faux fur if that is your vibe.

I think of it like getting dressed:

  • Big squishy “basic” cushions at the back (like jeans).

  • Smaller, eye-catching ones at the front (your accessories).

It helps everything feel layered and cosy without being cluttered.

Throw Styling Tips (Keep It Casual)

A throw is your best friend for chilly evenings and just making the sofa feel more inviting.

You’ve got two main looks:

  • Neat: Fold it lengthways in thirds and drape over the back or armrest. Tuck it in slightly if you want it to stay put.

  • Relaxed: Just sling it casually over the corner or arm — don’t overthink it.

Interior stylist Pippa Jameson says,

“Go for an oversized throw that two people can snuggle under, and make sure it feels soft and comforting.”

And if your throw won’t stay in place? Try tucking it into the cushions or using larger cushions to help hold it down. Easy fix!

Switch It Up with the Seasons

One of the easiest ways to refresh your space is by swapping out cushions and throws with the seasons.

  • Spring/Summer: Light cottons, soft pastels, florals, or breezy stripes.

  • Autumn/Winter: Chunky knits, warm tones like rust or mustard, and cosy textures.

It makes such a difference and gives the room a little update without any effort.

Styling your sofa doesn’t need to be complicated; it’s all about what feels right for you and your space. Cushions and throws are the easiest way to add colour, comfort, and a bit of your personality without lifting a paintbrush.

Have fun with it, mix and match, and don’t stress about getting it “perfect.” If you like how it looks (and it’s comfy to flop onto at the end of the day), you’ve nailed it.
