There is something about summer that makes getting dressed feel so much easier. No massive coats, no seventeen layers and no standing at the front door wondering whether you need a scarf, umbrella and waterproof just to pop to the shops. Although this is the UK, so maybe keep the umbrella nearby :)
I always get the urge to have a little wardrobe refresh when the seasons change, and this year I’ve been trying to add more pieces that I can actually wear in different ways rather than buying something for one specific outfit.
Comfort is a massive thing for me too. I work from home most days, so while I absolutely have those days where I’m answering emails in pyjamas with a coffee in hand, I’ve realised I feel so much more productive when I actually get dressed and make a little effort.
Nothing ridiculous. I’m not sitting at my laptop in heels and a blazer :) But a nice pair of trousers, a simple top and sandals instantly make me feel a little more put together.
Comfortable trousers are always a winner
I’ve become slightly obsessed with wide leg and relaxed trousers lately. They are comfortable, flattering and easy to style, which is basically everything I want from my wardrobe at this point.
Denim has also somehow made a massive comeback in my wardrobe. I genuinely hated jeans when I was younger and avoided them whenever possible, whereas now I’m always looking for another pair.
I particularly love styles with a comfortable waistband because you get the look of denim without feeling like you need to undo the button after lunch :) If comfort is high on your list too, elasticated waist jeans are such an easy everyday option and can be styled with pretty much anything.
Keep summer outfits simple
One thing I’m definitely learning with my wardrobe is that outfits don’t need to be complicated to look nice.
A good pair of jeans or wide leg trousers with a plain T-shirt, vest or slightly oversized shirt is such an easy summer outfit. Add a pair of sandals, some jewellery and a nice bag and you’re done.
I love pieces that can take me from sitting at my desk working to popping out for coffee, going for a walk or meeting someone for lunch without needing a complete outfit change.
Layers are still essential in the UK
Obviously, we can’t talk about a British summer wardrobe without mentioning layers because we can experience all four seasons before lunchtime right? :)
I always keep a cardigan or lightweight jacket nearby. They are perfect for cooler mornings and evenings, and you can easily throw one over a simple summer outfit without ruining the whole look.
Cardigans are probably one of the hardest-working things in my wardrobe because I wear them pretty much all year round.
Sandal season is officially here
The second there’s even a tiny hint of sunshine, my toes are coming out :)
I love a simple pair of black or neutral sandals because they work with everything. Jeans, trousers, dresses, skirts, you don’t really have to think about it.
Trainers are still my go-to when I’m doing lots of walking, but swapping them for sandals instantly makes an everyday outfit feel a little more summery.
Building a wardrobe I’ll actually wear
I think this is the biggest change in how I shop now. I’m much more interested in finding comfortable staples that work with clothes I already own rather than buying loads of random trend pieces that sit in my wardrobe untouched.
A couple of good pairs of trousers or jeans, basic tops, a cardigan, comfortable sandals and a lightweight jacket give you so many different outfit combinations without needing an enormous wardrobe.
And considering how unpredictable British summer weather can be, having pieces you can easily layer, dress up or dress down makes life a lot easier.
Now we just need the sunshine to actually stick around!
