There’s something about an evening at the theatre that gives me all the autumn feels. The weather is starting to turn, the darker nights are creeping in, and a night at the theatre with some wine and Romeo & Juliet sounded like the perfect little midweek date night :) Sam and I headed to the New Vic Theatre and this was actually my first time visiting. I’ve lived around here for years and never been, so I was really looking forward to having a nosey, seeing what the theatre was like and obviously watching Romeo & Juliet.
Romeo & Juliet is one of my favourite stories of all time. I absolutely love it, and I’ve watched and read so many different versions over the years, so I was really excited for this one. Then I found out Russell Kane was playing Romeo an then there was Natalie Casey playing Juliet and, as a serious Hollyoaks fan, yes, I was fangirling; I was excited, ahhhh!
ROMEO & JULIET IN THEIR 40S!
This version of Romeo & Juliet is a little different to the story we all know because Romeo and Juliet are in their 40s, and being 40 myself, I loved this!
Finally, Romeo and Juliet with a bit of life experience behind them, right?. I actually thought this was such a cool idea because we all know the original story and we’ve seen it done so many times, but changing their ages gives it a completely different feel. Falling in love in your 40s is obviously going to look and feel very different to falling in love when you’re a teenager, so I really liked what they had done with it.
There was loads of comedy thrown in too, which I wasn’t expecting. The audience were laughing and giggling throughout, and it worked. It still felt like Romeo & Juliet and still had the story that I’ve always loved, but it didn’t feel really serious or like you had to sit there concentrating on every single Shakespearean word, wondering what the hell was going on!
THE COMEDY TWIST
Russell Kane as Romeo obviously brings that funny side with him, but the whole cast were brilliant and there were so many moments where everyone in the theatre was laughing.
I loved how the story had been perceived and changed into something that felt really fun and different. Sometimes when you go and see a story that you already know really well, you pretty much know exactly what you’re getting, but this had so many little twists and funny moments that it kept it interesting.
If Shakespeare isn’t normally your thing, I think you’d still really enjoy this. I remember Shakespeare at school feeling like you needed somebody next to you translating the whole thing, but this was completely different. You could just sit back, enjoy it and get wrapped up in what was happening.
The cast got the audience involved, and I loved that. You didn’t feel like you were just sitting there watching a show from miles away; you actually felt like you were there with them and part of the story. With everyone laughing, reacting and getting involved, there was such a good atmosphere in there.
I’d never been to the New Vic before, so I didn’t really know what to expect from the theatre itself, but I really liked it. It felt cosy and intimate, and you could see everything so well.
THE PERFECT LITTLE MIDWEEK DATE NIGHT
Sam and I had such a lovely evening, and it was nice to have a completely different kind of date night. We do love getting away and going out for food, but sometimes you don’t need anything massive planned. Getting dressed up, having a glass of wine and going to watch something together was just really lovely.
It also felt like such an autumn thing to do. I’m fully ready for cosy season now, so give me darker evenings, a glass of wine, the theatre and a love story any day!.
Romeo & Juliet is showing at the New Vic Theatre from 17 September until 10 October 2026.
