Your girl has Kindle Unlimited back, and she has finally finished her first book in absolute months! Honestly, my reading slump has been real. I just haven't been able to get back into reading, and to be honest, concentrating on a book has been a struggle in itself. There's been a lot going on lately, life and all that jazz, and my poor Kindle has been sitting there wondering what on earth is going on :)
But we are back, baby! I've finished a book, I've already started another one from My Autumn TBR list, and I am officially on a roll. Well, that's the plan anyway; let's not get too ahead of ourselves! And of course, who better to get me out of a reading slump than Freida McFadden? She has so many books coming out, and I am absolutely here for it.
FREIDA MCFADDEN – THE DIVORCE
Naomi thought she had it all. The husband, the dream house, the family, the whole happily-ever-after situation. Until her husband decides to throw that all out of the window, kick her out, hire the best divorce lawyers in the city, drain their accounts and find himself a much younger girlfriend. Charming, isn't he?
Rather than accepting defeat and starting over, Naomi becomes increasingly interested in her husband's new girlfriend. And by interested, I mean things start getting a little bit obsessive. What starts as curiosity soon turns into something much darker, with secrets coming to light and Naomi finding herself in a situation that could put her life in danger. All for the sake of keeping her family together.
Right, hear me out with this one. I really enjoyed the story at the beginning. I was pretty hooked, actually, and if you've read anything by Freida McFadden before, you'll know she has a way of getting you invested in a story pretty quickly. One thing I love is when a book is written from the perspectives of different characters. I do love it when she does this, because you get to see things from different sides, and just when you think you've got everyone figured out, something else comes along.
However... there were definitely parts of this book where I was sitting there thinking, hang on a minute, WHAT?! Some things happened that I didn't think really needed to happen, and other bits just didn't make much sense to me. I found myself questioning a few things, and not necessarily in the good, clever plot-twist kind of way. I love a book that keeps me guessing, but there's a difference between a clever twist and me having to sit there wondering if I've missed an entire chapter!
Now, you know me, I never give anything away in my book reviews. If you haven't read it yet, don't worry, there are absolutely no spoilers over here! I will say that although I enjoyed the book, I wasn't completely sold on everything that happened. There were moments when I was properly invested, and others where my head was a little bit fried trying to make sense of it all.
Would I recommend it? Yes, absolutely. It's definitely worth a read, especially if you're already a Freida McFadden fan. It wasn't my favourite of hers, but it certainly kept me turning the pages, and considering this is the first book I've managed to finish in months, I'm taking that as a win!
I'm hoping this is the start of getting back into one of my favourite hobbies. Let's see how long this reading streak lasts, shall we?!
